LECTURE NOTES
Lecture 5: Letters / Understanding letterforms
3.5.19 (Week 5)

The uppercase letterform below might be symmetrical but it is not (only some letterforms are but not all of them), people tend to mistake it for being symmetrical without noticing the different size of strokes.

Fig 5.1
Even though Fig 5.2 has a similar letter 'a' next to each other, there is still a difference between the two typefaces.

Fig 5.2
The lowercase letterforms in Fig 5.3 are generally described as the x-height. One important thing to notice about the letterforms is the curved stroke in the letter 's', rises slightly above the median line. This is so the letterform appears in the same size.

Fig 5.3
Counterform – is the form in the negative space; vital role to play when letters come together. When designing a typeface the counterform is crucial.

Lecture 6: Cancelled
10.5.19 (Week 6)
We did not have a lecture today because we had to fix/touch up our e-portfolios. We were also given time to work on Project 1.

INSTRUCTIONS

PROJECT 1

Week 5

For this week, Mr Vinod introduced our project 1 to us. We had to create a 4-page booklet based on a magazine called 'First Things First Manifesto 2000' (http://www.eyemagazine.com/feature/article/first-things-first-manifesto-2000) using Indesign. He also asked us to sketch out ideas that we had for the booklet. Here are my ideas:

Fig 5.6 Sketches for project 1 #2

With only limited lines and shapes and with the 9 typefaces that he gave us at the start of the semester. We had to produce three examples. These are my three examples:

Fig 5.8 Examples 2 of project 1

Fig 5.9 Example 3 of project 1
Week 6

But when we showed Mr Vinod our layouts for the following week he told us we could only use a 2 pages max. So I took fig 5.7 first page as my main idea for a 2-page layout. For the second page, I wanted to make it look like it was stairs and a protesting sign/board. But Mr Shamsul said it was too jagged and cramped together. Mr Vinod also added that it looked like I was struggling to fit the all text into one page.

So I made another attempt but this time I change the second page to look like it was zigzagged. This is my final layout. This is it in JPEG version and PDF version.

FEEDBACK

Week 5

General Feedback:
Mr Shamshul gave us comments on our e-blogs; some of the instructions section are empty; make sure that format on the blog is correct; check if the pictures taken are in good condition; no awkward space or double spacing and please read more books.

Specific Feedback:
Mr Vinod liked my animation for the expression 'faint'.

Week 6

General Feedback:
Mr Vinod's comments on our e-blogs; put the backgrounds as there default colours do not use colours like pink blue black just white or creme colour is acceptable to use and makes it easier to read; put the subtitle smaller than the title; please put your personality caption under the pictures and take the e-blog seriously so you would not fail the course; he also told us not to use italic, condensed, capital or italic for the body text

Specific Feedback:

Mr Vinod said that I should make my title picture aligned with the texts and that the title 'exercise' should be the subheading thus he also told me to add a light grey highlight to my sub-subheading. For project 1 he told me not to use condensed fonts for the body text.

REFLECTION

Experiences

Week 5: I noticed that I'm actually quite decent at typography and that I'll have to work on Indesign more to create the layout for this project. I thought that project 1 was going to be good to work with since I'm more of a visual person but I didn't have a clear vision on how I wanted it to look like.

Week 6: I struggled a lot with thinking of a layout to do even though I looked at rolling stones magazines and books about layouts. Since we had to only make a two-page layout it was difficult for me to fit all the body text properly onto one page because of my idea

Observations

Week 5: A few of my friends looked like they were the walking dead and I actually liked designing layouts but I just couldn't find one idea which I could not use pictures.

Week 6: I noticed that most of the guys had their layouts approved while the girls were still working on the booklets. Designing a layout takes a lot of time without doing the research.

Findings

Week 5: I found myself looking at a lot of rolling stones magazines to get inspirations for my project 1. The magazine had a lot of pictures and colours so it really balanced well with each other but it made me think more about how to design and express the layout using only limited lines and shapes

Week 6: I found that I had a lot of ideas in my head but did not know how to put in out. Thus sketching the layout and planning about what you want to do is crucial if we want to manage our time.

Fig DRAWING LETTERS LETTERING

Lettering signifies "inscribed letters". This means that the works are characterised by their manual nature. In this book, the author has gathered works from great artists with personal and varied styles. Here are some works that caught my eye.
