Introduction, Stop Motion review and Video Editing | Week 1 | 28.8.19

For our first class, Mr Martin told us that this class will be separated into two types of sessions. Mr Martin will teach us about video production while Mr Razif will teach us about sound production. He then proceeded to ask if we have ever watched a sound motion video and to find our top three stop motion videos from Youtube and explain a little bit about what we like about it. Here are the stop motion videos I found very interesting. I chose 4 instead of 3 for stop motion videos to review, I couldn't choose between them

1. Negative Space by Ru Kuwahata & Max Porter

This video was the most recent stop motion video I saw on Youtube. It captured my interested because of the thumbnail. After watching the video, I had to watch it again to fully understand the plot but once I did I was :O (surprised). I love the way they folded the clothes along with the sounds, they all fit perfectly with the main character who was also the narrative. At the end of the short film, something tragic happened but all the main character cared about was the negative space.

2. Crazy office worker's night meal by Omozoc

I really like the random style when I first clicked it I didn't know what to expect. I also like how he came back for work pissed and started ripping out his clothes and objects to make his dinner. And the plot twist at the end was the best.

3. Angry's Mom Night Meal by Omozoc

Again from the same person as the above video, he has a similar style but instead of making food he also dances. It was very entertaining. I also like the overall vibe to the video.

4. Birdlime by Evan DeRushie

In this video, the bird was the main star of the show. What I liked about it was that the bird went through a lot of hardships like whether it should trust the person giving him food whilst being injured at the same time. The plot brought me through a lot of thinking process and the part I found funny was when the bird was surrounded by humans he could mimic their habits such as talking on the phone, shouting and even the construction sounds.

Then we also did a really simple video editing exercise using Adobe Premiere Pro which is a software used to edit videos. Mr Martin gave us some video clips that were filmed by our seniors. The task was to watch a short scene from the tv series called Jessica Jones and re-arrange the clips as shown in the movie as a new video. Here is my first try where I shorten it to a minute.

Video and Sound Editing | Week 2 | 4.9.19

During today's session with Mr Martin we were asked to show the stop motion videos and why we picked it to the whole class. After that, he proceeded to show us how to overlap dialog in the previous exercise we did in week 1 and how to use the ripple delete tool. Our task was to take the video where we edited the previous week and make it only 50 seconds. I managed to shorten it to 50 seconds

WEEK 2 PROGRESSION

My stop motion idea: Will have a mixture of happy, sad and maybe scary/eerie feeling. It will be about a boy who likes to skateboard and one day when he was trying to do a trick, he cracks his head and rolls into another dimension and ends up in a graveyard alone and ends up finding his other friends at last they are reunited and celebrates by drinking beer.

Inspiration: Safety First

Materials: mixed media (paper, clay, cupboard, etc)

Title: The Stoopid Sk8er Boi

Visual Style: (not confirmed yet)

Selling Point: I like this idea because even though it feels really random and out of the ordinary we would have fun creating an even better storyline along the few coming weeks thus also experimenting with different materials.

Video Shooting and Sound Editing | Week 3 | 11.9.19

Today we were given a lecture about cinematography by Mr Martin. We were then asked to do the shooting exercise around campus. This is the storyboard we had to follow with 9 video shots that we have to take. He then asked us to work in pairs and my partner was Xuan. But it soon turned out to be an eight-person group.

Three Act Structure, Choosing Slots for project 2, Practising with DSLR | Week 4 | 18.9.19

We started the class with Mr Martin giving us a lecture about storytelling in film.

Then we had to watch this short film called Lalin and identify the three-act structures and plot points.

After that, we had to choose slots number 2 for the romantic scene and number 3 for the horror scene, my group got the horror scene. This was for our project 2. Moreover, Mr Martin taught us how to set up the tripod and use a DSLR, thus we did the previous exercise using the 9 shots but now we had to practice with a DSLR. This is the final video with the DSLR:
