LECTURE NOTES
Lecture 7: Typography in Different Mediums
7.10.19 (Week 7)
Today we learned about typography in different mediums. I took some notes down here they are:

Static Typography
  • means it's not moving
  • it is the most traditional form of typography
  • in print design it uses CMYK colour but in screen it uses RGB

Print VS Screen
For print, it is static while in screen its interactive; the resolution for web design is 72 PPI while for print it's 200 PPI (home printing) and 300 PPI (professional)

Kinetic Typography
is the art of moving type

Environmental Typography
it employs architectural elements like patterns, materials, images, and colours

3D Typography
it helps create extra depth and can be a great display option

Virtual Reality VS Augmented Reality
Virtual Reality is a created simulated environment to able users to be immersed and interact with 3D worlds while Augmented Reality is an enhanced version of a real-world environment.

INSTRUCTIONS

PROJECT 2

This project is a continuation of project 1, but we would have to create 3 collaterals. The collaterals are a poster, a microsite (which will be done in interactive design subject) and two different collaterals that are up to our own choice. The information we need is listed below:

The Design School,
Taylor’s University

The Troublemakers Manifesto: A Design Colloquium
Open Public Lectures:

November 8, 2019

Lew Pik Svonn, 9AM-10AM
Ezrena Mohd., 10AM-11AM
Suzy Sulaiman, 11AM-12PM
Muthu Neduraman, 1PM–2PM
Fahmi Reza, 2PM-3PM
Fahmi Fadzil, 3PM-4PM

Lecture Theatre 12

Mr Vinod told me to try using a paper background; so I tried using 3 different backgrounds.

I felt like it wasn't really working with the backgrounds so I just left it white.

Mr Vinod gave me feedback and told me to keep it as a simple font instead and that I had enough splashes that are in my key artwork.

Collateral 2: T-shirt

I tried three different designs for the t-shirt. In my opinion, I liked the first designs the best.

The designs that were approved by Mr Vinod:

Collateral 3: Tote bag

For the tote bag, I did four different designs but I only liked the first two. I wasn't sure if I could or could not use the "a design colloquium" but Mr Vinod told me to include it so fig 8.6.1 is the updated version with the subtitle.

Mr Vinod liked my first design, here are the final outcomes of the tote bag:

FEEDBACK

Week 7
General Feedback:
For typographic systems make sure to have an outline around the spreads. Do not put them in individual pages. The PDF (in spreads) must be made public and visible. For finding type exercise we need to put every refinement process on a baseline. Make show to show first refinement and last refinement. The lecture notes must be summarised, embedded and completed.

Specific Feedback:
Idea 4: the virtual elements weren't working, but Mr Vinod likes the ":a design colloquium" typeface which he then told me to work on with "The Troublemakers Manifesto.
Idea 5: The Cards Against Humanity idea didn't work.
Idea 6: The Coco Chanel concept can work but not the execution.

Week 8
General Feedback:
Mr Vinod told us to update our feedback sheet because we'll be marked on it too, make sure to work on the right document size if its A2 don't do it in A3 because it will increase the font size if you try to expand it, for our point size we need to make it between 14-18 points. We also need to make sure our e-blogs are up to date and to put more effort into them because Mr Vinod and Mr Shamsul can only look and grade our process/work from there, in the reflection section we have to write more than one sentence unless we can summarise our experiences/observation/findings in very good English.

Specific Feedback:
Mr Vinod and Mr Shamsul said that my key artwork represents 'The Troublemakers Manifesto' with both the fonts and the splatter but he asked me to bring the 'The' down and use the pixelate filter to make it pop out more, and I should also try using a paper background for project 2. If I am using the cement wall make sure to make the paint a little transparent so it fits/blends with the wall.

Week 9
General Feedback:
Mr Vinod told us that if we want to break up our key artworks to put it on our collaterals make sure that the audience will understand that is a manifesto. For our final project, we should work independently and make our own decisions, we should also start researching on what we have to do since it takes a lot of time to find an idea.

Specific Feedback:
Poster - I should use a more simple typeface and don't use the splashes from the key artwork, because it will overwhelm the spaces thus I should also align the texts with each other.
T-Shirt - Okay
Tote Bag - I need to add the "a design colloquium" and not leave it out of the design

REFLECTION

Experiences

Week 7; After showing my main key artwork to Mr Vinod and a few other ideas. I felt completely lost on my concepts but at least I could work my way around the typeface I chose for (: a design colloquium). I tried out a few different ideas with the typefaces but I noticed something still was missing. When looking at the font it gives me skater vibes or some street art like the font was a different and improper format that doesn't follow the rules. Week 8; I felt really nervous before my feedback was given because I did not know what to expect but I felt really relieved that my key artwork was approved (': and I'm glad that the final outcome is way better than what I tried to do before. For the collateral, I couldn't find a proper design or background that I wanted to use hence I'm struggling a little bit with the poster design because if I use 18pt it wouldn't fit my design. Week 9;
at first, I thought that my designs weren't that good when I attempted to make a few different variants before Mr Vinod briefed us on our final project. It was more on a touching up but I tried a few different typographic systems with the poster but it just wasn't working well however after the feedback given I could feel myself appreciating negative space more because I didn't use the splashes but focuses more on the alignment and the typeface. I felt really good and surprised because Mr Vinod picked my first attempt at designing the tote bag and t-shirt.

Observations

Week 7; Today's class proceeded gradually as we had to work on our project 1. The atmosphere felt stressful due to a lot of my classmates that did not have their work approved yet including mine. Week 8; When Mr Vinod told us that we would have only 10 minutes to complete the blog everyone was really focused on finalising it even though he gave us lunch break at the same time. Thus, I didn't go out to have lunch since I was making sure the blog looks neat and complete. Week 9; I noticed that my first attempts were way better than my last few which I find rather odd but good because for me I think that if I do try more attempts I should be better hence Mr Vinod also approved of them too. I felt that the class and I enjoyed the story that was told for our final project.

Findings

Week 7; I found that I struggled a lot with this project up till this week I still didn't get it approved but that's okay I'll still push through. Week 8; I found myself having a difficult time designing the collaterals because it looked really weird and it didn't make any sense to me. Nevertheless, I will try my best to show good results by next week. Week 9; In my view, I managed to prove to myself that if I keep trying different types of layouts and designs I will eventually find my way there. I also felt relieved as I didn't have to make that many changes to my collaterals but just for the poster.

JUST MY TYPE by Simon Garfield
7.10.19 - 14.10.19 (Week 7 - Week 8)

Fig 1.1 JUST MY TYPE

In chapter 21 which is titled "The Worst Fonts in the World" talks about how you can see the most beautiful and ugly fonts everywhere around you, and there are many reasons why we dislike certain fonts, they may be overused or misuse. For example, exam papers normally use Gill Sans. Other than that, people oftentimes see the mistakes of typefaces. In the 1930s, people thought that Futura wouldn't last for a long time and even shown an expression of disapproval however today we may be appalled by BLACKSHIRT and AFTERSHOCK DEBRIS which are grunge fonts. Nevertheless,  they may be everywhere in a decade, and a decade after that we may get bored with their blandness.
