PROJECT 1
Recipe Poster | Week 3 - Week 7 | 21.1.20 - 21.2.20
For this assignment, we had to either create a poster that followed a step by step recipe or make a narrative of that recipe. We were allowed to choose any recipe we wanted. This project is separated into two parts: an infographic poster about our recipe and an animated infographic video.
The poster had to be in A3 format that could have extra information about the dish like the history, calories, the time it takes to prepare the dish, etc whilst also having the ingredients, tools, and steps to make the recipe. Since it was an infographic poster it should be more graphics and fewer words.
At first, I was really clueless as to what I wanted for my poster. I started searching for several recipes with the idea in my head that I wanted a dessert dish. I came across 5 options which were:
- Raspberry Chocolate Mousse
- Chocolate Mousse
- Oreo Macarons Recipe
- Parfait
- Acai Bowl (I ended up choosing this)
I chose my recipe based on what I could visualise and picture together as both a poster and a video. Therefore, it was the acai bowl that got picked! I have only tried it once and it was a lot for one person to eat as it was rich and filling. I got the recipe initially from youtube but the person who uploaded it also had a recipe blog/website so I started out from there.
I looked for reference in Pinterest and started sketching out my ideas using Procreate on my Ipad.

Trip for Intercultural | Week 5 | 3.2.20
We went to Japan for our intercultural project.
Continue with poster | Week 6 - Week 7 | 3.2.20
Before I went to Japan I had already made the bowl and the ingredients. As you can see from the sketches in Fig 1.1.2 I wanted the ingredients to have a flow like motion before it reached the bottom of the bowl so with that I combined idea #1 and idea #4. I made the bowl with Illustrator with a unique pattern at the front.

I drew the ingredients using Procreate too. It really helped me to get the highlights I wanted along with a more in-depth look.

I then included the ingredients into the poster.

I added the splash to symbolise the ingredients falling down into the bowl.

After completing the poster I didn't like the composition as the bowl was too big and the ingredients, toppings, and instructions looked too cramped at the top. So I tried to fix it by taking out the lengthy words in the ingredients and toppings since the graphics showed what it was thus putting them in the middle and separate the optional ingredients to the left and instructions to the right. I also changed the typeface of the title and labels along with the banana pieces (from side view to top view).

However, I felt like the poster was too messy to work with so I made another perspective of the bowl to show the top view of the toppings instead of a side view. Following the references, I found below and the sketches I made:

I went with sketches #1. I started with making the top view of the bowl and reusing the ingredients I made before in Fig 2.2.1. It looked really appetising to eat so I continued to work with this layout.

I added the other graphics to explain more about what were the toppings, what ingredients were used to make the smoothie, a spoon and lines to point out the toppings. And a box and title labeled as Instructions to separate the poster into two parts so it looks balanced.

| Fig 2.3.5 Process | Adding the rest of the graphics |
I decided to add the blue dots in the middle to show where the lines were pointing at, a box and how much is needed to be used for the ingredients thus adding a label. I added shadows to the toppings and the spoon and a box around the optional ingredients. Moreover, the instructions now have steps that are visible with the white circle.

I then made a ribbon that would fit the rest of the elements so it would look pleasing and not too overwhelming. I removed the instruction box as the line already separates both the parts of the poster. Hence, including how many calories can an acai bowl gives you.

Ms Anis said that I should get rid of the banana as it has outlined so it would look awkward with the other elements, to make the title just a little bit bigger, for the optional box make a grey background colour so the vanilla can be seen and make the bowl 3/4 so people are able to see the ingredients properly.

After finishing the poster, we had to create an animated infographic video or a gif of our recipe, I chose to use After Effects.
Since I made my poster in Illustrator I could separate the elements into different layers and files. So, I used the background colours in my poster for the video's background and transferred the Ai files into After Effects. Other than that, I added background music along with sound effects to make the animation better.
Here is the final outcome of the animated video.
