LECTURE NOTES

Lecture 1: Introduction to Intercultural Design
6.1.20 (Week 1)

It's been quite some time since I had a class in a lecture theatre, we were given some examples of what our seniors did last year and a brief overview of what we would be during throughout the 7 weeks of class and the theme we would be working on which is about Mythology. After that, we were slipt into groups consisting of 4 to 5 people in one group, our task is to prepare a proposal with at least 5 ideas by week 3 as the trip to Japan would be on week 5. In the proposal, we needed to include:
  • Working Title
  • Background of Study and Problem statement
  • Research questions
  • Data collection
  • Presentation of Findings
Lecture 2: Culture and Us
13.1.20 (Week 2)

We were given a lecture by Ms Jinchi about culture and we also had a sharing session where we had to see what type of cultures we grew up with.

PROJECT 1

Forming groups & choosing a topic | Week 1 | 6.1.20

Since it was only the first class we had to form groups of either 4 or 5. My group consists of 4 members with Siti, Aiden, Pei Yi and myself. Before the next class, we had to come up with ideas of what we wanted to research. My group had a few ideas for what we wanted for mythology but our main idea wasn't clear. We had to understand what the meaning of mythology was first.

Ideas | Week 1 | 9.1.20

We told our ideas to Mr. Charles, Ms. Anis, and Mr. Asrizal during the consultation session. We talked about a yokai called Tengu. Here are the feedbacks that we got:

  • we managed to cover the theme Mythology but we need to do more research about the topic
  • we need to be more analytical and brunch out more
  • where are the indications of tengus in Japan in modern society?
  • we need to look beneath the surface about tengus and what they're all about
  • make connections to modern society
  • before our trip to Japan outline the things we need to look out for
  • we can either ask a question or make an assumption that this is what it is and when we get to Tokyo we can investigate whether it is true or not.

Confirming our idea on Tengu | Week 2 | 16.1.20

We did some research about tengu and the meaning of mythology and how it interpreters together with Japanese folklore. We compiled what we found about tengu into docs.

Furthermore, my group and I were deciding what our problem statement might be initially we had two ideas but we only chose one. We then showed Mr Charles our slides about tengu and he agreed that the idea we chose could be alternated to 'Tengu influences on entertainment design and new media of 21st century'. He mentioned that we had a clear direction on what we wanted to do and that we chose the topic tengu.

The slides below in PDF version.

Proposal Presentation | Week 3 | 21.1.20

Today was the Proposal Presentation but since our group was under Mr Charles we only had to present next week on Thursday. We just had to submit the slides we had on Google Classroom. The PDF version of the proposal slides:

Proposal Presentation | Week 4 | 30.1.20

We presented our slides to both Mr Charles and Ms Anis. They told us that we needed to rephrase our research objectives and research questions, to add more points into our methods of data collection like the interview questions and discuss more the places that we planned to visit in Tokyo for our research. The PDF version of the updated proposal slides:

Trip to Japan | Week 5 | 6.2.20

We collected as much data we could find about tengu in Tokyo, Japan.

Project 2 | Week 6 | 13.2.20

After coming back from Japan, we had to compile the research we collect and present it the following week. We had another consultation session with Mr Charles before the actual presentation. And he told us that before our findings of tengu we should add our research title, research objectives, and research questions so that we are able to refer back. He also told us to make a diagram of Japan's map of where we could find tengu. Moreover, we had to include if we met our research objectives or vice versa, to elaborate more about the research questions which relates more towards Mount Takao as we found Tengu mostly in that area of Japan and do a quick analysis for the interviews that were carried out with the locals.

Project 2 Presentation | Week 7 | 17.2.20

We presented our slides to the class and got feedback from Ms Anis and Mr Azrizal. Ms Anis asked us which idea would be our final outcome and that we only had 2 weeks to create the final outcome so we had to choose wisely and carefully. It also has to answer our research objectives and research questions of the project. We chose to do idea 7 since Tengu is mostly found in the mountains and not in the districts. It was an architectural model that has 2 sides to it - Tokyo city and Mount Takao.

Below is the PDF version of the data collection slides:

However, we had an extra consultation with Mr Charles and he told us that our final outcome should be what we learned about Tengu and how Malaysians can view tengu. We could maybe create a brand that was a parody of tengu, tengu's house or even a Malaysian tengu, etc. He told us to keep in mind that our design statement/rationale was important to mention as it gives a brief statement as to what we are doing. He also advised us to interpreted tengu's long nose into our final outcome.

Submission of Final Outcome | Week 9 | 2.3.20

We decide to go with a costume design showing tengu's features, characteristics, mix match of Japanese and Malaysian believes and mythologies. Here our final outcome slides:
